Federal Regulation Proposed For E-Cigarettes

Cedar Rapids, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) - The Federal Drug Administration is pushing for more control over a cigarette substitute.

Right now, E-Cigarettes are not regulated by the FDA but that could soon change.

A FDA proposal asks manufacturers to start reporting ingredients before getting approval to make them.

They also want to ban selling nicotine devices to anyone under 18 and have E-Cigarette removed from vending machines where minors are allowed.

Research into the effects of E-Cigarette use is still very young and the FDA is not sure what the long term risks are.

Advocates say E-Cigarettes can be a healthier alternative to traditional smoking.

But the FDA says it's too soon to tell.
