Days Remain for Rural Internet Legislation

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/Fox 28) -- A law that would facilitate the building of infrastructure to support more Iowan's with access to broadband internet access and cell phone coverage is coming down to the wire.

The intent of the legislation is to better connect rural Iowa to support business and education.

Some small communities, however, need additional assistance with the hurdle of getting mobile communications companies to construct towers to provide coverage.

There are many details that need to be worked out including aesthetics, legal requirements, as well as complying with zoning and planning regulations.  All of these must be considered before construction can start.

For smaller communities, it means that these details do not get resolved as quickly as in larger communities.

Now, senators are seeking to create legislation that is flexible enough to expand coverage to rural areas while still protecting the authority of larger cities.
