ICCSD Elementaries "Low Achieving"

IOWA CITY, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) -- Both Mark Twain and Kirkwood Elementary Schools in Iowa City have been designated as Schools in Need of Assistance and Persistently Low Achieving schools.

The designations means that not every student tested at proficient levels on state standardized tests, in line with the No Child Left Behind act.

But the district and parents both say, that does not mean Kirkwood and Twain are bad schools -- they join a list of four other district schools with the same titles.

The district says, as no Child Left Behind Standards get stricter, more and more schools will see the same results.

Both Twain and Kirkwood are undergoing more teacher training and data reviews to increase student performance.
