EnvisionCR Wants Your Ideas

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (FOX28/CBS2) Imagine kayaks shooting through whitewater rapids near the new amphitheater as boarders swing a primo at a world class skate plaza and people watch the action from their loft apartments and garden rooftops in the downtown.  As of right now, its all in the future plan for Cedar Rapids after hundreds of people turned out to offer their ideas Wednesday night.

EnvisionCR is the project that drew more than 200 people to the Czech and Slovak Museum.  Its the master plan for the future and the first complete update since 1999. To meet the needs of as many residents as possible, city leaders want everyone to have the opportunity to offer input.

Community Development and Planning Director Gary Kranse says its all about hearing from people who have different priorities and different dreams for their city, Its my town, but its not about me.  Its really about the community and we want to hear what they have to say.  Give us your ideas, talk to us about whats good about Cedar Rapids and what we could do better to help your quality of life.   The brainstorming could eventually design the look of the city ten or twenty years from now.

People came from all over Cedar Rapids with their own agendas and wrote down scores of ideas, from what kind of rebuilding should be done in flood devastated areas, if any, to where parks should be expanded or planned on the edge of town, to what kind of lofts or condos should be designed to encourage people to live downtown.

Nancy Perry came to the EnvisionCR gathering to tell city leaders she believes her Northwest end of town is being neglected, We put our life blood into our homes in that neighborhood and nothing gets done.   Nate Sherwood wants a new skate park, Its like the same cost, 100 grand,   a world class skate plaza is about the same as a splash pad .. so its not too much to ask.   Brady Dorman says the city of the future needs a better transit system, It really needs longer service hours, more frequent buses and expanded routes.
Hannah Childs has one more suggestion, she wants to paddle her kayak down the middle of the Cedar, Id like to see a whitewater park in downtown Cedar Rapids, I was thinking right around Mays Island .

For now its all on the drawing board with a chance of being part of EnvisionCR and the future. Kranse says there will be more meetings to whittle down the lists and focus on the best pieces of the plan for city council members to consider. If you missed the meeting you can still offer your thoughts by going to the citys website.
