Employers Look Local
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) At least one corridor company is changing the hiring process just a little bit and reaching out to potential employees in their own neighborhood.
Getting a job is good, but Rommill Shepherd wants a career.
"Most people can walk off a job and think nothing of it, said Shepherd. A career to me is somewhere that you'll be probably for the remainder of your life."
So he came to talk with people who have careers right now at General Mills.
"I felt like this would be the perfect opportunity for me to actually find out how to go about filling out an application with them, said Shepherd.
The informal, low-pressure discussion session is hosted by Diversity Focus and Four Oaks as part of an effort to pair up companies with job openings with the people ready to step right in.
"The people who maybe don't even know these jobs exist with General Mills and other major employers and they might think they're best opportunity is at a fast-food restaurant, said Diversity Focus Director of Communications and Media Affairs Gabe Erickson.
Jobs like that, or any other job that just doesnt pay well makes it harder for a family to be financially stable. But a parent starting a career at a much bigger company could change that situation for an entire household.
"It helps them meet the day-to-day needs of their kids, said Four Oaks Program Coordinator Selinya Carew. And in turn, these kids are able to gain long-term stability and be successful adults."
It makes an afternoon now an investment in the future.
People who attended were encouraged to go to a more formal presentation on April 5 and 6. Thats where theyll get information to start the job application process.
