Voices of Diversity: Goodwill

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - Goodwill of Eastern Iowa is well known for its retail stores. But, there is a little known part of Goodwill that's making a huge impact on people's lives.
Goodwill's Contract Services employs more than 200 people each year and places hundreds in jobs outside of Goodwill when they've gained the skills or job history to move forward. Contract Services helps individuals in varying situations who have barriers to employment. Some have gaps in their work history, others have a disability, some are referred from drug court. Each one is given an opportunity to earn a wage at their own pace. The overall goal is to help them move on to work out in the community.
Most Contract Services employs are paid a piece rate, which means they earn money based on how well they perform. The efforts of Goodwill's employees serve 17 area businesses. On any given day, Goodwill employs between 40 and 60 people in its Cedar Rapids warehouse.
