2013 Cedar Rapids Crime Statistics

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) --
Violent crime in Cedar Rapids is rising.
According to the Cedar Rapids police department, violent crime like assaults and sexual abuse increased by 35 (7.17%) in 2013.
Property crimes like theft went up 235 (5.83%), and drug arrests jumped up 6 (75%).
It's not all bad news, though.
Chief Wayne Jerman says the department successfully dropped the number of shots fired and robberies in the city.
"We put a gun violence reduction initiative into place where we really wanted to emphasize the need to reduce those incidents," said Jerman.
Jerman also says police officers seized more than 100 guns that were owned illegally or used in a crime.
