Governor Proposes Military Benefits

DES MOINES, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Before a Joint Session of the State Legislature, Governor Branstad outlined ideas for veterans, renewable fuel standards and education. The theme: Iowa is Working.

Governor Branstad says one of the ways to keep it working is to lend a hand to the military.

"In Iowa, we honor our veterans - not only with words and ceremonies; but with action, said Governor Branstad.

That action comes in the form of the Home Base Iowa Initiative.

"I think that was one of the best points Governor Branstad made and one of the newer points this time, said Marion Democratic Representative Daniel Lundby.

It would help Veterans turn skills learned during their service into credits towards a degree or a license needed for a job. The Governor also hopes to eliminate all taxes on military pensions.

To show our gratitude, let's make Iowa the leader in respect, support and opportunity for veterans, said Governor Branstad.

Other law makers say theyre behind Veterans, but these proposals are just more of whats already been done.

"It was a Democratic legislature that was the first state in the country that passed all 10 Department of Defense state initiatives for vets, said Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Jack Hatch.
