Wheelchair Basketball Team Gets Big Boost

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - An Iowa basketball team has been working for weeks to return to the court. A trailer carrying the wheelchairs for the Iowa Chairiots basketball team was stolen in December.

While the trailer was eventually recovered, about $40,000 worth of the team's wheelchairs were no longer inside when it was found.

But, thanks to community donations, in less than a month, the team has raised about half of the money they need to replace the wheelchairs.

Director for Sportability of Iowa and an Iowa Chairiots player, Jayden Barrett, said the donations mean everything to the team.

To get to where we were previously, it took years of fundraising and we've got half way there in a month. I mean the community's just been phenomenal, Barrett said.

The team has recently received support from area hockey fans. The Waterloo Black Hawks hockey team and the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders helped  raise about $4,300 for the Chairiots during their last couple of games.
