Winter Storm Preps
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) The City of Cedar Rapids wasn't taking any chances on Thursday night as the possibility for freezing rain loomed for the evening. While predictions indicated minimal ice accumulation, less than a tenth of an inch, the temperatures were expected to be at or below freezing. Any rain on Thursday night was expected to freeze when it hit the ground.
For that reason, the city moved more than 200 tons of salt to prepare to combat icy roadways.
We'll see what happens, ice storms always use more material than other storms, Craig Hanson the Maintenance Manager for Cedar Rapids Public Works said.
Temperature has everything to do with what crews will put on city streets during the storm. If it's more than 25 degrees outside, they'll use salt. If it's less than 25 degrees, they'll use a salt/sand mix
The Department of Transportation also had trucks out on the highways spreading brine to prevent the formation of ice on roadways.
While CBS2/FOX28 Chief Meteorologist, Corey Christiansen, said he did not expect snow to accumulate on Thursday night, he did expect rain to freeze, creating ice on roadways. That meant elevated areas like bridges would get slick faster.
Crews were also preparing for what is expected to be a larger storm over the weekend.
Its still a long time before the actual winter storm hits us, but we know something is going to happen, Hanson said.
The big storm is expected to hit Saturday night into Sunday. Parts of the Corridor could see between six and eight inches of snow. That could be a mess for drivers.
Sandy Kopeschka is one of those drivers. She wasnt taking any chances Thursday afternoon.
Going out like this in the wintertime, you've got to be prepared, Kopeschka said.
Kopeschka was driving from Minnesota to Indiana to see her grandkids for Christmas.
I'm so excited, I've got all these presents and food and goodies in the car and all our coats and winter boots. We brought everything we could find, cause you never know, Kopeschka said.
She explained that the preparation was worth it. With a bright smile, and while clapping her hands, Sandy said,Its just so fun to see all the family!
