Nelson Mandela Dies At 95
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Former South African President Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95. The current president, Jacob Zuma, made the announcement Thursday.
Mandela has been in declining health for several years, and had recently been dealing with a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.
Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first democratic leader, after battling apartheid in the nation, and serving 27 years in prison.
About a year after being released from prison at 71 years old, Mandela became South Africa's first black president.
