Iowa Roommates Accused of Hiding Casino Winnings

EVANSDALE, Iowa (AP) -- Roommates in Evansdale face charges in connection with allegedly trying to hide casino winnings from creditors.

36-year-old Jeffrey S. Sampson hid more than $1,700 from a jackpot winning on a slot machine in July.

Sampson owed more than $7,800 in back child support at the time of his winning, and the money should have been processed through a database that looks for such financial obligations.

Investigators say Sampson asked his roommate, 35-year-old Jamie Sue Holkan, to tell the casino the money was hers. Holkan is accused of using her Social Security and photo identification to claim the winnings.

Sampson and Holkan were arrested Monday on suspicion of a prohibited act involving gambling. Court records do not list attorneys for them.
