UI Will Conduct Assistance Animal Training

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- The director of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission says a settlement with the University of Iowa will ensure that students with assistance animals have equal access to university housing.
The commission announced this month that the university has agreed to train employees on state and federal laws that require reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities who use assistance animals. The school will also revise policies for how such requests are handled and pay $10,000.
The moves settle a complaint filed by a student with disabilities who claimed she was denied housing in a residence hall because of her assistance animal.
Commission director Beth Townsend says in a statement the settlement "ensures that the university will continue to provide meaningful assistance to its students with disabilities today and in the future."
