Novel Pulled from Ankeny Classroom

ANKENY, Iowa (AP) -- Copies of a novel about a boy whose father died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks have been removed from an Ankeny classroom.
A parent had questioned the content of Jonathan Safran Foer's "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." The American Library Association tracks challenged, restricted and banned books, and it says the 911 book contains profanity, sex and descriptions of violence.
Assistant Ankeny Superintendent Jill Urich says the novel was removed from ninth-grade classrooms at Northview Middle School because the title had not received school board approval for use in the district's English curriculum. The book remains in the school library.
About 60 students had been assigned copies of the book to read for a class project.
