Branstad Pardons Turkeys

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) --
Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has spared two turkeys named Carmel and Apple as part of the annual Thanksgiving pardon.
Branstad granted the reprieve during a ceremony Monday at Terrace Hill in Des Moines. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey and officials with the Iowa Turkey Federation were in attendance.
Carmel, a hen, and Apple, a tom, walked around freely as Branstad delivered the pardon. They will be sent to Living History Farms in Urbandale.
The Des Moines Register reports Branstad has pardoned two turkeys each November that he's been in office. Monday marked his 19th year of clemency to a set of birds.
