Man’s Best Friend Tackles Bullying

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) Andy and Norm go together pretty well. Whether its on a stroll in the park or in the pages of Andys childrens books. Now, theyre tackling bullying.

"Norm and Andy go to a dog park and they encounter a mean bulldog by the name of Frankenstein who doesn't want to share and is kind of mean to Norm, said Teacher and Author Andy Allen.

Throughout the book, norm learns about self-confidence in the face of a bully, and Frankenstein learns how to be a friend.

Andy uses Norm as a positive role model to help teach his lesson. It makes it easier for kids to understand and then apply out here on the playground.

You put it into perspective like that and all of a sudden it's a lot easier for a young child to understand, said Allen.

And its a lesson that some say is desperately needed. Its estimated that about 160,000 kids skip school each day because of bullying. Allen says a childrens book is a great vehicle for change.

"When they get into Middle School, and High School, we won't have these issues because these kids will already know acceptance and tolerance and learning to work with each other and celebrate differences, said Allen.

Just like these two pals already do.

Andy says future books will tackle other tough issues like the loss of a loved one.
