JCPenney/Westdale Development Group Deal

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- The delay in redeveloping the Westdale Mall area could soon come to an end.

John Frew with Frew Development told CBS 2 News they have now reached an agreement with JCPenney that will keep the department store in the mall. Frew said this construction season is already lost, but this agreement allows them to move forward with the project.

The $108 million redevelopment plan will turn Westdale into a 72 acre shopping center and multi-use complex.  Thats something mall walkers at Westdale said theyre excited about.

I think its good, I think it will give this area a chance to renew, Mall Walker Rachel  Elson-Canfield said.

An economic analysis commissioned by Frew Development, also released on Wednesday, said that Cedar Rapids projected population growth, low unemployment rate and projected increase in household incomes all bode well for the project.

The City of Cedar Rapids is a partner in the Westdale redevelopment project, so Frew will go back to the City Council in December to get the changes approved.
