Iowa Mayor Dies, Then Wins Re-election

THOMPSON, Iowa (AP) -- The last hurrah for Thompson Mayor Roger Johnson came two days after his death, when he won re-election.
Winter Funeral Home says the 85-year-old Johnson died Sunday at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. But his name remained on the ballot for Tuesday's municipal election in Thompson. The town of 502 people sits about six miles from the Minnesota state line.
Winnebago County officials say Johnson received 11 votes on Tuesday, more than any other person who received one or more write-in votes. Johnson had been mayor for eight years.
City Clerk Diane Adams says the City Council will discuss how to fill the position when it meets Tuesday. Options could include appointment or a special election.
The new mayoral term doesn't begin until Jan. 1.
