Tie in Mayor's Race Could Lead to Hat Drawing

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) -- The election for mayor of the southeast Iowa city of Salem has ended in a tie, and the contest could be decided by drawing a name from a hat.
The Burlington Hawk Eye reports the Tuesday vote between incumbent Linda Ward and challenger Dan Patterson resulted in both getting 46 votes.
The votes will be recounted, but Henry County Auditor Shelly Barber says she doesn't expect the outcome to change because all absentee votes already were accounted for.
Because Salem doesn't have an ordinance requiring a runoff election when a tie occurs, Barber says a member of the Henry County Board of Supervisors will draw the winner's name from a hat after the official canvassing.
Salem has about 400 residents. It's about 30 miles west of Burlington.
