CR Schools Report Rising Enrollment

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- For the first time in several years, the Cedar Rapids School District reports an increase in enrollment by more than 100 students.  At this week's school board meeting, a report found 16,033 students enrolled in Alternative Kindergarten through 12th Grade.  The report found increases in both elementary and high school enrollment levels.
The increase comes after years of decline in the aftermath of the Floods of 2008.  "While one data point doesn't make a trend, we are all ecstatic that the data is indicating more students are in our schools, said Dr. Benson, Superintendent of Cedar Rapids Schools.  "This number reflects the efforts of our City leadership and flood recovering initiatives, as well as the core neighborhood projects and the reinvestment in housing that is happening."  Dr. Benson said experts predicted such a turnaround would take 10 years and he's optimistic Cedar Rapids can recover faster.
