Woman Held Captive
Ottumwa police said Tuesday that a man has been arrested and charged in connection with a kidnapping case after a woman reported being held against her will for more than two weeks.
Police said Adem Anota, 33, of Ottumwa, was charged with first-degree kidnapping.
Police Chief Tom McAndrew said last Thursday that police received a call from an adult woman who reported being confined against her will from Sept. 24 to Oct. 9.
The woman told police she was finally able to escape the home on Oct. 9. Court records show the woman said Anota threatened to kill her and her family if she did not have sex with him.
The woman also reported being sexually assaulted multiple times, police said.
Anota was charged in the case last Thursday. The Ottumwa Courier newspaper reports he has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The woman told police that she originally went to stay with Anota because he had promised to get her a higher paying job.
Anota is being held in the Wapello County Jail pending bail of $150,000.
