UI Fans Excited For Basketball Season

IOWA CITY, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- When it comes to the University of Iowa student body, football fever still dominates the campus. However, basketball madness is the new diagnosis for UI.

"A lot of people are getting ready, getting their gear, gearing up I guess," said sales associate Jacob Murphy with UniversiTEES.

Look no further than Hawkeye merchandise stores, where the madness started to become contagious last year. Basketball merch has suddenly become more visible.

"Went from no specific basketball shirts...to three," said Paul Hoff, store manager at Underground Printing. "We have more people talking positively about basketball than we have in the past for sure."

Positive vibes filled Carver tonight for the black and gold blowout. It was a showcase of some sick moves from the Hawkeye men's team. Some say with last year's NIT championship game appearance, the team has found the cure for what ailed them.

"When I came here in 2010, we were kinda not so good," student Gianni Sesto said. "To get the crowd going again, I think it's gonna be a good year."

"Very proud, they did a good job," Hawkeye fan Charlie Stanford said. "McCaffrey has really done a good job of building the team," Stanford said.

This year the team wants more, and the prognosis from fans is even more wins.

"I think that anything short of the NCAA tournament is going to be a little bit of a disappointment," Hoff said.

"I wanna say we win it all, that would be pretty cool," Sesto said.

If tonight was any indication, we're in for a healthy season.

The Hawkeye men's basketball team is set to open the season at home on November 8th against UNC-Wilmington.
