CR Civil Rights Commission Celebrates 50 Years

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) --
   Today marks a special milestone for civil rights in Cedar Rapids.
   The city's Civil Rights Commission has now been going strong for 50 years.
   Officials tell CBS 2/FOX 28 News they expect to deal with more human rights issues in the next few years, including gender identity, sexual orientation, disabilities, and familial status.
   Monica Challenger, the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Commission, says, "Our scope has really broadened, and I'm sure a lot of other complaints will be investigated through our office and our city will take the lead and establish ordinances to take care of our citizens."
   Challenger says the Commission's ultimate goal is to educate the community so the it is no longer needed.
