Hiawatha Fire Department Gets Real Life Practice

HIAWATHA (CBS 2/FOX 28) - Rookie firefighters don't have to wait for the next alarm, to get experience.  Hiawatha Fire Department used an old house, to get experience.

Over two days, the nine inexperienced firefighters had the chance to see how a fire spreads, and how to react to it.  It also gave the veterans in the department a chance to keep their skills sharp.

Hiawatha Fire Chief Mike Nesslage says this is also a good reminder to everyone, to check their smoke detectors.

The home was donated by a developer, who already needed to remove it from the property.
