30 Year Waterloo City Council Member Steps Down
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- A Waterloo City Council member has decided that 30 years on the panel is enough.
73-year-old Harold Getty is opting not to seek re-election in the Nov. 5 election.
Getty will be Waterloo's most experienced elected official, having spent 30 of the last 40 years on the council when his term expires Dec. 31.
He was first elected to the council in 1974. He served 10 years, then didn't seek re-election. He started another stint in 1994 and served another 10 years before losing re-election. He was elected again in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.
Getty is retired from his job at John Deere.
He says, "It's time to let some other people take over."
