Police Make an Arrest in Arson Case

EVANSDALE, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- On September 24, 2013, at approximately 11:39PM an Evansdale police officer observed a suspicious vehicle that was parked in the 4900 Blk. of Lafayette ST. in Evansdale.  At approximately 1210 AM on September 25, 2013, Black Hawk County Sheriff's Deputies and the Waterloo Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at 5043 Lafayette RD. in Elk Run Heights.

On arrival it was found that three vehicles had been set on fire which initiated an Arson investigation.

An Evansdale officer observed the van moving on the street and due to it being a suspicious vehicle  stopped the vehicle.  Evidence at the scene of the fire was located in the vehicle that was stopped.

Evansdale Officers took the driver of the vehicle into custody on charges resulting from their traffic stop.   Black Hawk County Sheriff's Deputies also charged the driver, Steven Randall Edwards of 5900 Osage RD. Waterloo, age 31 with Burglary in the Third Degree, 3 counts of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, 1 count of Criminal Mischief in the 5th Degree and Arson in the Second Degree.  Three vehicles were heavily damaged in the fire.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Fire Marshal for the City of Waterloo.  The City of Waterloo provides fire service for the City of Elk Run Heights.

Edwards was transported to the Black Hawk County Jail.
