Total Child Program Kicks Off Campaign

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/ FOX 28)--Mariana Hendricks has come a long way this past year.
Just a lot of good accomplishments with school, my GPA, making the deans list, Hendricks said.
Her biggest accomplishment was getting her six year old son, who struggled with behavioral problems-- enrolled in first grade.
A big step she says she couldnt have made without support.
Helping me maintain goals, housing, school, just being there, she said.
She credits her success to Total Child a program which helps children and families in Wellington Heights with job skills, education, and housing.
A part of the programs goal is to rehab 100 homes in the area and make them more affordable.
We need to make sure that someone is permanently and stably housed before we can work on the other challenges they may face in their life, said Joe Lock, executive director of Affordable Housing Network.
The program is also helping change the areas image, getting rid of old trouble spots like a crime-ridden apartment building, torn down in 2012.
But with a little bit of help, the future of Wellington Heights and its residents like Mariana, anything is possible.
Its so great to have that foundation and build from there, Hendricks said.
