Cedar Rapids Apartment Fire Displaces 10
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) A late afternoon apartment fire at Oakland Apartments, 3300 Oakland Road NE, has displaced six adults and four children. Firefighters were notified of a fire at the six-unit, three level apartment complex at 5:33 p.m. this afternoon.
When firefighters arrived on scene, all of the occupants had safely escaped the building. There was smoke showing in the common hallway on the ground level as the first fire engine crew made entry through the front door off of Oakland Road NE. They advanced to the first floor into apartment #3 which was completed charged with smoke and found fire in between the first floor and basement level apartments. Firefighters determined that the majority of the fire was found in the attic space of the laundry room, which is centrally located on the basement level. There was fire damage to the ceiling on the laundry room, as well as fire damage to the two adjacent apartments on the basement level. There was extensive smoke damage throughout the entire building, resulting in an extended displacement of the occupants.
At the time of the fire, there were four adults and one child in the apartment complex. Each unit is a two-bedroom unit, with two apartments per level (basement, first, and second floors).
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants. The majority of the occupants were alerted to the fire by the strong smell of an electrical burning odor and smoke. The smoke alarms did activate and provided warning of an actual fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.No further information is available at this time.
