Iowa City Food Bank Needs Donations
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- The largest food bank in the Iowa City area is asking for donations after seeing record demand for July.
The Johnson County Crisis Center Food Bank in Iowa City logged 4,400 uses in July, a record high.
Food bank director Sarah Benson Witry says summer usually brings only moderate demand for food, and organizers are in the midst of studying why demand has been so high.
Organizers set a goal of collecting 90,000 pounds of food during the Crisis Center's annual summer food drive, dubbed "Thanksgiving in July." Benson Witry says that's usually enough to provide clients with food until the beginning of the school year.
But this year, the bank distributed 100,000 pounds of food in July alone.
