Local Woman Scammed by Newspaper Ad

CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/ FOX 28)-- Barbara Sherman doesn't want anyone else to make the same mistake she did.
"It was a very stupid thing for me to do," said the 78 year old woman.
Last year, she saw an ad in a local newspaper, offering a bag of valuable rare coins. All she had to do was send in $99 plus a fee with one catch.
"It said that if you open that bag, you cannot get a refund or return it," Sherman said.
When she got the bag, she got a surprise, but not the one she hoped for.
"When I counted it up, I had sent in $100, for a bag of coins that was worth less than $15," Sherman said.
With the state attorney's help, Sherman got her money back, but she got angry all over again when she saw the same ad months later.
An ad the better business bureau says comes from Ohio-based company Brilliant Built Technologies with a long list of too-good-to-be-true offers.
The company has an "F" rating from the better business bureaua  grade found by a quick internet search that could have saved Sherman time and money.
"That's number one, check out anything before you buy over the phone or through an ad in the paper, said Barbara Green of the Cedar Rapids BBB.
Its a lesson the 78-year-old says she's learned and wants to share.
"You're just throwing your money away, so my advice is just don't do it, Sherman said.
