Fugutive Shot Dead During Break-In
BEDFORD, Iowa (AP) -- The manhunt for an escaped convict who authorities say shot a deputy is over after investigators say he was shot and killed by a Bedford homeowner.
In a news conference Tuesday morning, authorities announced the death of Rodney Long. He was wanted for breaking out of a minimum security prison in Clarinda and shooting a deputy who approached him Sunday night.
Monday evening, authorities say Long broke into the home of Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly. Jerome, 71 and Carolyn, 66 say they were held against their will for four hours before they decided to defend themselves.
They told police Long had a semi-automatic weapon when they took a shotgun and killed him with one shot.
Long was serving a five year sentence when he broke out of the prison.
