IC Police Investigate Arson

IOWA CITY -- On August 6th, Iowa City Police received a report of a fire that had been set in a stairwell at an apartment building at 2653 Westwinds Drive. The fire, which had occurred on August 3rd about 6:30pm, was contained to carpeting on the stairs and no call was made at that time to either the police or the fire department.

A joint investigation into this incident by the Iowa City Police and Iowa City Fire Departments has revealed that witnesses observed a teen-aged black male wearing a blue shirt running from the area of the building shortly before the damage from the fire was discovered.

Investigators are requesting assistance from the public in identifying the young man seen in the area and Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000 for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information about this crime is urged to contact CrimeStoppers at 358-TIPS (8477). All calls are held in strict confidence and anonymity is guaranteed. Individuals providing information do not have to reveal their identity to collect a reward.
