Fayette Names New Police Chief

FAYETTE, Iowa (AP) -- The northeastern Iowa city of Fayette has hired a new police chief to lead a department the city almost eliminated.
44-year-old Brad Gardner will be Fayette's new police chief.
Gardner had been supervising a shift of officers for Waukee's police department when he was hired. He's an Ottumwa native and U.S. Navy veteran.
After Fayette's last police chief resigned in March, the city considered eliminating the department and hiring the sheriff's office to handle law enforcement.
But city officials kept the department after residents spoke out.
Gardner will be sworn in at Monday's city council meeting.
