Cyclospora Spreads to More States
CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) --
The rare Cyclospora parasite has now been found in eight states.
More than 250 cases have been reported, 134 of them in Iowa.
Other states with at least one confirmed infection include: Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia, Connecticut, Illinois, and Kansas.
At least ten people have been hospitalized since the first cases were reported on June 28th.
No food items have been implicated so far, but public health investigators believe the parasite came from fresh vegetables. They do not believe the produce was grown in Iowa.
It is not yet clear whether all states are part of the same outbreak, and additional cases are still being confirmed.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have started a website to keep up with the latest Cyclospora details. Information can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/cyclosporiasis/outbreaks/investigation-2013.html or at the Iowa Department of Public Health's website,
