CRFD Says Goodbye to old Central Fire Station

(CBS2/FOX28) CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa It was LIVE on the FOX 28 News at Seven we witnessed the end of an era as demolition crews began knocking down the old Central Fire Station.

For many in Cedar Rapids, the building had been a symbol of what was lost in the floods of 2008, however, for firefighters it was more like an old friend.

This was our home one-third of our life, said Captain Joel Miles of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.  Our families would come visit, wed have Christmas get-togeathers, Thanksgiving get-togeathers.

Joel says the sense of loss he feels is shared by all who worked in the building but he adds watching each wall crumble comes with it excitement too.  Soon he and his fellow firefighters will have a new place to call home in a location less vulnerable to future flooding.

Theres a lot of positives, said Miles.

The new Central Fire Station is scheduled to be completed on August 16th.

CBS 2's Josh Scheinblum reports.
