No Child's Play For Young Business Owners

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- Starting a business is often a big risk, financially speaking. Now, imagine having to juggle that, school, and sports.

"Just let me know what flavor you guys want," Sydney Rieckhoff said to a group of customers Thursday.

In a world comprised mostly of adults, you would think Sydney was just your server.

"This is called 'The Chill', and we serve Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream here," she said.

But, this isn't just a typical summer job for Sydney.

"People are pretty amazed when they hear that I own it," Sydney said.

You heard right -- the scheduling, the ordering, and yes, even the firing.

"It's kind of awkward when I have to see them in school," Sydney said.

She is 15 years old. She already owns a business at the NewBo Market, and she does pretty well.

But don't tell that to her younger brother Carter.

"People come and visit, and they're like, 'Where's the owner of this business?', and everybody points to me, and I'm like, 'Yeah'," Carter Rieckhoff said.

Carter owns CR Popcorn, every 11-year-old's dream, right?

"I have always loved popcorn since the day I could eat it, so yeah," Carter said.

Though business often is an adult's game, Carter and Sydney are clearly holding their own.

"This is just my starting business," Carter said.

"This is going really well, so I don't know. Maybe I'll open a couple other stores or something," Sydney said.

Sydney and Carter do own the businesses, but they aren't operating completely alone. Their father, Bill, owns Morgan Creek Fresh Produce, which is next door in the market, so they get plenty of business guidance from him.
