One Dead After Trench Collapses at Construction Site in Waterloo
WATERLOO (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- A trench collapsed in Waterloo trapping and killing a construction worker. It happened at about 2:00 p.m. Thursday, on San Marnan drive.
Authorities raced to help the worker but rescue crews arrived too late, and what started out as a rescue attempt turned into a recovery effort. "Then we called our tech and rescue team and went into a recovery type of operation, said Waterloo fire Chief Pat Treloar.
Throughout the afternoon, a fire truck and EMT van were at hand as the teams worked to get the victim out of the trench.
They recovered the body with a medical examiner on scene, but the name and age of the victim is not being released. "I do not believe everybody's been notified from the company or next of kin so I'm not going to release that information at this time,” Treloar said. Officials have confirmed that the victim is female.
They also say work was being done to redevelop the road into a residential area. "I've talked to some representatives from the company and not everybody within the company knows about this incident,” said Treloar. Officials are not releasing the name of the company but they expect an investigation will be carried out.
