Man Arrested After Attacking Man with Hammer
IOWA CITY, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28) --
On June 2, 2013 at approximately 5:50 a.m., Iowa City Police officers responded
to the Pedestrian Mall near the intersection of Dubuque St. and Washington St
for a report of a fight in progress. Further information was that the fight
involved two males and one of them was hitting the other with a hammer.
Upon arrival, Officers observed a male with a hammer in his hand and another male a few feet away bleeding profusely. Officers ordered the male with the hammer to the ground and took him into custody. The victim was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of his injuries, which are believed to be non-life threatening.
Investigation into the matter determined the defendant approached the victim while he was sleeping on a bench and started hitting him in the head repeatedly with the hammer. The defendant stated he assaulted the victim because he thought he was a person he had an altercation with previously, but then admitted that after the assault, he realized he had the wrong guy.
The defendant was identified as Richard John Hoyt, DOB: 10-07-51. Hoyt was charged with Attempted Murder, a Class B Felony, and placed in the Johnson County Jail. This case remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.
