Sewage Flowing Into Mississippi River

PRINCETON, Iowa (AP) -- The Department of Natural Resources says damage to an electrical system is causing sewage to flow into the Mississippi River north of Davenport.

The DNR says the problem happened Monday morning in Princeton, where a sump pump failed at a wastewater pumping station. That failure caused flooding that damaged an electrical system, leading to a bypass of the city's wastewater treatment system.

About 75 gallons of wastewater was being discharged into the river each minute.

The DNR says city officials hope to resolve the problem later Monday.
