UPDATE: Police Looking for Confirmation Runaway is OK

UPDATE from Coralville Police Department: 

On June 4, Destiny Ekwall, age 14 of Coralville was found sleeping in the stolen truck with Smead in a church parking lot in Pleasant Hill, IA. by Pleasant Hill police officers.

Ekwall was taken to a local youth shelter and arrangements are being made to reunite her with her family.


Smead was charged by Pleasant Hill Police with possession of stolen property and harboring. Questions concerning the specific charges should be forwarded to the Pleasant Hill Police Department at 515-265-1444.


Coralville Police are grateful for the cooperation from the media in our efforts to locate Ekwall and Smead. We are confident that the wide media coverage helped in locating her and returning her safe to her family.

From the Coralville Police Department -

On June 2, custodians of Destiny Ekwall, age 14 of Coralville reported that she voluntarily ran away with a subject believed to be Christopher Smead, age 24, WM, 5’07”, 165 pounds. They are believed to be driving a Green/Silver 1996 Dodge Ram 2500; IA plate 931NQZ. This vehicle has been reported stolen from Cedar Rapids. They were last seen on June 2 in the truck and their intended destination is unknown. It is believed that Ekwall left with Smead voluntarily and is not in any danger.


Coralville Police are looking for the couple to verify that Ekwall is safe and to return her to her family. A photo of Ekwall and Smead is below. If anyone has contact with them or knows of their whereabouts, it is requested that you contact the nearest law enforcement agency or the Coralville Police Department at 319-248-1800.
