Iowa Woman Accused of Lying About Cancer

NEVADA, IA - An Iowa Falls woman has been accused of lying to people about having cancer.

The Story County Sheriff's Office says 37-year-old Heidi Denio told people she was suffering from terminal cancer. Investigators say she forged a doctor's signature on a letter to back up her diagnosis.

After a March 2012 benefit raised more than $50,000 for her, authorities say they received anonymous tips about Denio and began a yearlong investigation.

They say their investigation determined Denio had a fictitious medical condition while continuing to receive public funds.

Today, police filed charges against Denio.  She faces first-degree theft, ongoing criminal conduct and forgery.

Court records do not list an attorney for Denio and there is no public phone number listed for her.
