Latest Crop Report Shows Major Gains

DES MOINES (CBS 2/FOX 28) - The latest crop report shows that last week was the best weather of the year for getting out into the corn and soy bean fields in Iowa.

The report, released Monday afternoon by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northy shows that by the end of the week 71-percent of the corn crop was in the ground, up 56-percent from a week ago. But although they got more in the ground faster than ever before, the crop is still behind 2012's 97-percent by this point in the growing season.

Soybean planting is at about 16-percent, well behind last year's 78-percent at the same time a year ago.
