Davenport Waiting to Take Down Flood Barriers

Davenport, IA - Davenport officials say they will not dismantle flood barriers that held back the Mississippi River until they're sure the possibility of flooding is over.

The Public Works director Mike Clarke says he will keep the barriers through the weekend, then decide on Monday whether to remove them.

He notes temperatures are expected to be high this weekend, possibly causing snow to melt quickly in the north and increase the flows of the river.

To protect against flooding by the Mississippi, Davenport officials made use of collapsible barriers rather than sandbags.  The steel mesh cells can be quickly filled with sand using a hydraulic lift.
