ROAD TRIPPIN' Galena
GALENA, Illinois (CBS2/FOX28) —
For a boom town built on lead mining that once boasted a population bigger than Chicago, Galena has slowed down a little, but not much! The historic town, just over the Mississippi River from Iowa, is a paradise for shoppers, golfers, Civil War buffs, antique hunters and anyone who just wants an adventure that's a short drive, but feels like it's a world away.
At first glance its main street is trapped in time, with brick buildings from the 1800's, old hotels where Abe Lincoln waved from the balcony and quaint bed and breakfasts. On closer examination, it is one of the most lively downtown scenes anywhere, filled with top-rated restaurants, experimental brew pubs, more than 100 eclectic shops offering everything from clothing and collectables to gorgeous art and gourmet cooking items and topped off with homemade wines and candies. It was recently named one of the best main streets in the entire Midwest!
Come along as reporter Matt Hammill takes you on an adventure just 90 minutes from the corridor, ROAD TRIPPIN' to Galena, Illinois!
