Charlie Becker & Camp Courageous

The name Camp Courageous is synonymous with it's Director, Charlie Becker.

This year, Charlies marks 35 years as Director; a job he took after finding it the Des Moines Register want ads. He says, "I thought this would be something I'd do for a couple of years, like the Peace Corps and go off and get back into teaching. But I fell in love with the place."

Board President Margo Ahrendsen's two boys were campers. She says, "He IS the face of Camp Courageous." She adds, "Camp is unique in the fact that it doesn't matter who you are, what you are. You are the star for that week and are treated like a star."

During Becker's tenure, Camp Courageous has grown from 40 acres to 200 acres, 5 buildings to 25 buildings, from 211 campers to 7,000 campers and a staff of 12 when he started, to a staff of nearly 100.

And he's not done. Currently construction is underway on Lake Todd and a new pavilion.
