The Vinton Fire Department has sent out an update after a massive downtown fire destroyed local businesses in downtown Vinton.

Crews were called to Michael & Down Furniture store on E 4th Street at 7:13 p.m. The fire then spread to Clingman Pharmacy and the Fischer Law Firm. Other nearby businesses sustained smoke and water damage.

The fire sparked up again Friday morning, causing crews to respond to the scene.

The City of Vinton is working to restore power to some surrounding businesses. A structural engineer will inspect nearby businesses to make sure they are structurally sound.

Crews knocked down the building hoping the debris would help smother hot spots.

The Vinton Police Department is asking people to avoid the area as several streets are still blocked off. Ice is also a hazard in the area.

First responders would like to thank the community for providing food, hot beverages and shelter while battling the fire.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office, North Benton Ambulance, Garrison Fire Department, Shellsburg Fire Department, Urbana Fire Department, Mount Auburn Fire Department and the Van Horne Fire Department all helped respond to the fire.
