Village Meat Market sees busy weekend after fire
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) —
Cleaning up from a fire is never easy but staff at the Village Meat Market and Cafe say business has been strong following a fire late last Wednesday.
The restaurant was closed on Thursday following the fire to assess the damage and begin clean up.
Luckily they were able to open up for hungry crowds on Saint Patrick’s day on Friday and Saint Joseph's day on Saturday.
The fire was contained to the smokehouse area on the back of the restaurant.
Owner Loraine Thompson had originally hoped to save the smoker, lovingly named Bertha, but now she says it will have to be replaced.
Right now they are smoking their popular meats at another location.
It will be at least 3 weeks before they will be able to replace their smoking equipment on site.
Manager Alex Lerch says costumers and other businesses were quick to offer support.
“They feel very comfortable here and when they see something like that they just they want to keep that going,” says Lerch of their loyal customer base. “They're hearts really come out to us.”
Lerch adds that many customers come out specifically to show their support after they heard of the fire.
