Save CR Heritage opens up historic NewBo buildings
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) —
Save CR Heritage is giving people a look inside some historic Newbo buildings this Saturday to celebrate 5 years of historic preservation.
The short walking tour will take people to 6 historic buildings where hosts will be on hand to share some of their unique history.
The tour runs 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday February 17th starting at the historic Lunak House, a 1915 Czech immigrant home at 213 13th Avenue SE.
Tickets for the tour should be picked up at the door for $10 and guests will be given a map of tour locations.
Some buildings on the tour are now home to businesses while others are not normally open to the public.
Guests will be some of the first to see inside the relocated White Elephant building, which was saved from demolition and has now been totally restored.
The tour ends at the old Ideal Theater, now the Ideal Social Hall for snacks and a cash bar.
Along with being historic these buildings also faced devastation in the flood of 2008.
Save CR Heritage board member, Beth DeBoom, hopes the tour will help people see the difficulty and importance of preserving these pieces of the past.
"These were some really ugly ducklings and because of that they were in extreme jeopardy of coming down so I want them to picture what that buildings looked like gutted, forlorn, very well on their way to being lost and now they're preserved to this state of incredible beauty and integrity," says DeBoom.
All proceeds from the event will go to Save CR Heritage.
