Proposed CR Cedar Bayou Water Park Needs New Site
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) — Cedar Bayou, a planned water park and hotel in Cedar Rapids, will not be built at its proposed Hawkeye Downs location. The water park's CEO Nick Ford says the decision to move the $77 million, 70,000 square foot facility came after an analysis revealed the proposed building site near Hawkeye Downs wasn't suitable for a project its size without an increase in construction and structural costs. Instead, Cedar Bayou says it is exploring alternative sites that best fits their vision and the community. Below is the statement from Cedar Bayou:
Cedar Bayou Park had to make an extremely difficult decision this week. Following the analysis of a geotechnical investigation performed earlier this year, it was determined that the ground was not suitable for a project of our size and weight without significant increases in construction and structural costs. We are disappointed that we will not be able to build on a great site in cooperation with Hawkeye Downs. Throughout this process; however, we have kept alternate sites on the radar and are now working to identify the site that best fits our vision and best serves the region. As of now, our schedule is still on track for opening in the last half of 2018, but will update as soon as anything changes. Thanks for your cooperation and patience as we bring this exciting venture to Eastern Iowa.
