A Minnesota man will spend more than 14 years in federal prison after he was caught trading child porn online while he was a patient at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

A release from the U.S. Attorney's Office says Michael Kennedy, 49, of Monticello, Minnesota was sentenced to 170 months in prison for distribution of visual depiction of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Kennedy was a patient at UIHC in 2015 when staff suspected he was taking pictures of them with his tablet. When staff confiscated his tablet, they found what appeared to be multiple images of child porn.

An investigation revealed that Kennedy was posing as a young male and trading child porn with others through social media while he was still a patient at the hospital.

In addition to time in federal prison, Kennedy will also serve ten years of supervised release following his imprisonment, pay $100 to the Crime Victims' Fund, and register as a sex offender.

University of Iowa Police, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and the Cedar Rapids Police Department all contributed to the investigation.
